Shenandoah Ultralight 40°F Multifunction Summer Backpacking Quilt
Summer warmth to 40°F for 11.5 oz. 1000 fill power down behind a 0.67 oz shell, in a 48-inch cut that works as a top quilt or hammock underquilt. Sewn in Pennsylvania.
At 11.5 oz for the Regular, the Shenandoah Ultralight is the lightest quilt in the JRB lineup — a 40°F summer backpacking quilt built for warm-weather trips where weight is the first thing you cut. 1000FP down, Argon 67 shell. Also runs as a hammock underquilt.
Built for Back Sleepers and Average-to-Slim Builds Who Don't Spend the Night Thrashing Around
Wide quilts are cut for side sleepers, larger folks, and restless movers. The Shenandoah is cut for people who sleep on their back, don't thrash around much, and find excess fabric more of a nuisance than a comfort. At 48 inches across, it covers you fully without pooling underneath you or bunching up when you roll to a side. If you're tall and lean — think 6'3", 200 lbs, a back sleeper who occasionally drifts onto a side — this is the quilt for summer nights. The extra width of a wide quilt will get in the way. The Shenandoah won't. If your trips push into cooler temperatures — nights in the 20°F range — the Hudson River Ultralight 20°F is the same quilt built for three-season conditions.
How It Gets to 11.5 oz: 1000 Fill Power Down, Argon 67 Shell
The Shenandoah Ultralight 40°F is filled with 1000 Fill Power down — the highest-grade down available. A 40°F rating takes far less down than a colder quilt, and at 1000FP that down is doing its job more efficiently than 850FP alternatives — which is how this quilt comes in at 11.5 oz without compromising warmth. The shell is Argon 67 — a 0.67 oz nylon certified downproof with a DWR finish — the lightest shell fabric in the JRB lineup.
Weight is where this quilt makes its argument, and sewn-through construction is part of how it wins. Shell and lining are stitched directly to each other instead of being separated by the internal fabric walls a box baffle requires — that takes fabric, thread, and labor out of the quilt, and the stitch lines still divide it into baffles that keep the down where you put it. At 40°F there is no deep loft to protect, so those walls would be weight spent on warmth you would never call on. JRB builds box baffles into its 20°F and 0°F quilts because a cold-weather rating lives or dies on full loft; here the rating does not ask for it, and that is part of how this became the lightest quilt JRB builds.
Every Shenandoah Ultralight 40°F ships with a 33% overstuff by weight. Down naturally migrates toward the ends of each baffle over time, leaving the center of each baffle thinner. The extra fill means every section retains enough loft to hold the 40°F rating even after downshifting occurs — no cold spots through the middle of the quilt. The same buffer compensates for loft loss as the down accumulates oils between cleanings.
The foot box is formed using a drawcord, cord-locks, and double-sided Kam Snaps. Snap it closed on cold nights for a sealed foot pocket; leave it open on warm nights and use it as a blanket. Double-sided snaps let you connect a second quilt in colder conditions.
At 11.5 oz, the Shenandoah Ultralight is light enough to stop being a trade-off. It goes in the pack because it's barely there, comes out at camp because 40°F nights are more common than people plan for, and earns its place without an argument.
Also Works as a Hammock Underquilt
The Shenandoah Ultralight attaches to your hammock using the JRB Underquilt Suspension System (sold separately) and insulates against the cold air beneath — the primary cause of cold-weather hammock discomfort. It fits all gathered-end and bridge hammocks including ENO, Hennessy, Warbonnet, Dutchware Chameleon, and most DIY designs.
Named for the Trail
The Appalachian Trail runs 101 miles through Shenandoah National Park along the Blue Ridge — oak and tulip poplar forest, long ridgeline walking, and a trail that enters near Waynesboro and exits near Front Royal. It's green and humid in summer, the kind of stretch where you stop at a Wayside for a blackberry milkshake or grab a pint at one of the lodges before getting back on trail. Nights on the ridge stay cooler than the valley. The Shenandoah was built for those nights.
